This charming vintage cat jug is believed to date from the early to mid-20th century and is probably from Staffordshire, England. Its barrel-shaped body and climbing cat handle are strongly rooted in the much-loved Victorian Staffordshire cat tradition, reinterpreted here in a warm, characterful mid-century style.
The cat forms the handle, stretching playfully up the side of the jug with an expressive face and hand-applied sponge decoration in classic calico tones of black, ginger and cream. The soft crackle glaze across the surface adds depth and texture, giving the piece a gentle aged patina that feels unmistakably British.
Novelty animal jugs have long been part of England’s pottery heritage, particularly in Staffordshire, where potteries became known for producing decorative ceramics with humour and personality. This piece carries that same spirit — decorative, slightly whimsical and full of charm.
Ideal as a small bud vase, shelf accent or simply displayed as a sculptural ornament, it makes a delightful addition to any animal-themed homeware collection or cottage-style interior. A lovely piece for cat lovers who appreciate vintage British pottery with history and character.

In keeping with its age, the jug shows overall surface crazing to the glaze, which contributes to its vintage character. There is a small chip to the rim, visible on close inspection, along with light age-related wear around the base. Please see photos. The piece remains structurally sound and displays beautifully.
