A rare pair of Victorian Staffordshire spaniel jugs dating to around the mid-19th century, circa 1850. Staffordshire jugs in spaniel form are far less commonly found than the well-known begging spaniel jugs, and pairs are particularly scarce.

This design is further distinguished by the presence of hand-applied gilt decoration, an exceptionally uncommon feature on Staffordshire dog jugs of this period. The remaining traces of gilt, now softly worn with age, add depth and character, enhancing their unmistakably early Victorian presence rather than detracting from it.

Each jug is individually modelled with expressive faces and lively proportions, reflecting the charm and spontaneity typical of Staffordshire pottery from this era. Displayed together, they create a strong visual impact and work beautifully as a decorative pair on a sideboard, shelf, or within a traditional or character-filled interior.

Condition

Both jugs are in very good antique condition for their age of over 170 years. There is surface wear and fading to the painted and gilt decoration, consistent with age and use, which adds to their authentic Victorian character.

One jug shows a fine hairline crack at the spout, visible in the photographs. This appears to be an old firing or age-related hairline rather than a later break or restoration, and it remains stable. No evidence of glued repairs or restoration is observed. Overall, the pair presents extremely well and is remarkably intact for Victorian Staffordshire jugs of this rarity.
