Dzi Beads are ancient beads from Tibet. Similar to etched carnelian, they are designed by baking natural dyes onto agate. These beads are believed to have been made around the 1st to 6th centuries AD. However, the components of the dyes used in the baking process remain largely unknown, making Dzi Beads one of the more mysterious antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they have also been discovered in Bhutan and regions of the Himalayas such as Ladakh.
The different baked patterns are said to have various meanings, with the "eye" patterns being particularly prized. In Tibet, they are considered talismans for wealth and prosperity and are highly treasured and passed down through generations. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tianzhu" and many replicas made with similar techniques are widely available. However, the ancient Dzi Beads that have been passed down through generations remain extremely rare and valuable.
