A wonderfully preserved copy in an attractive half leather binding of the first modern English edition of William Tyndale's 1526 New Testament.

This copy belonged to one of the most important figures in American book publishing and collecting, Frederich Melcher [1879-1963]. Over many years, he collected one of the finest collections of books about books [from which this copy derives its provenance], was responsible for the creation of the Newbery Medal for Children's Literature in 1921. He was president of the Boston Booksellers' League, close friends with Robert Frost, etc.,

Further, it previously belonged to Benjamin Lincoln Swan [1813-1899], who graduated Princeton 1836 and was an influential Presbyterian divine during the 19th century. Much of his library is in the Special Collections of Princeton. There are a few translation notes and marks in the margins in his very neat pencil; not detracting in any way.

Tyndale, William. The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Published in 1526. Being the First Translation from the Greek into English, by that Eminent Scholar and Martyr, William Tyndale. Reprinted Verbatim: with a Memoir of His Life and Writings by George Offor. Together with the Proceedings and Correspondence of Henry VIII., Sir T. More, and Lord Cromwell. London. Samuel Bagster. 1836. First Thus.

Very good in original half calf, rubbed and bumped at extremities, surfact crack at front hinge and some leather abbrasions. Very solid and good overall.
