This little notebook reveals itself as a very very tender one, quietly telling a story of a young man's artistic aspirations and what one presumes was his first trip from farm in Pennsylvania to New York City. I purchased it from a Pennsylvania based dealer who had several other sketchbooks by the same Nice Steagner (this one dated 1900)--those others filled with drawing after drawing of cows, more cows, and more cows, occasionally horse or sheep, too. But here, a mix of small sketches, varied notes and lists, and a few clippings. I will let you look for yourself, but note the page including the address of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (simply described as "Museum") shortly followed by a page with flag and figure "drawing made in New York City." And the newspaper clipping about "Life Conditions of Great Writers." And instructions to self regarding number of hours to be spent drawing. What I see is a young man surrounded by cows dreaming of becoming a great artist.
5 7/8" x 3 7/8", 53 pgs (leafs), filled in a scattered way. Most but not all pages of drawings/notes documented. All in good condition.
