Sharp tools are the foundation of safe, efficient, and enjoyable woodturning. In this 3 hour hands-on class, students will learn how to properly sharpen both high speed steel (HSS) and carbide woodturning tools using a slow speed grinder equipped with CBN wheels. The class will focus on understanding tool geometry, establishing consistent bevel angles, and developing repeatable sharpening techniques that produce clean, predictable cutting performance on the lathe.

Students will begin with an overview of grinding equipment, including the advantages of slow speed grinders and CBN wheels for sharpening turning tools. The instructor will demonstrate how to safely set up and use common sharpening jigs and tool rests to achieve accurate angles and maintain tool profiles.

Participants will then learn how to sharpen essential HSS turning tools—including spindle gouges, bowl gouges, scrapers, and parting tools—while maintaining proper bevel geometry. The class will also cover maintenance and edge care for carbide tools, including proper rotation, cleaning, and replacement of carbide inserts.

Throughout the workshop, students will gain practical experience at the grinder while learning techniques to sharpen quickly, safely, and consistently. Emphasis will be placed on developing confidence at the sharpening station so students can maintain razor-sharp tools in their own shops.

By the end of the class, students will understand the principles of tool sharpening, how to properly grind and maintain common turning tools, and how sharp tools improve both turning quality and safety.
