A very handsome reverse calf large 4to Bible by Thomas Baskett, owned by 18th century Quaker, George Miller, and passed down by descent through the Miller family. Miller was one of the founders of Providence, Pennsylvania in Delaware County, an early abolitionist and correspondent with Benjamin Rush on the issue, and a founding member of the Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society, established in 1775. 

Includes two hand-drawn custom bookplates for George Miller, a quarter sheet of a bi-foliom with one side having comments about a Presidential election [see below, probably in reference to either the election of 1796 or 1800] and the reverse having some brief notes on the knowledge of the absence of knowledge as a part of knowing, and light and darkness as knowledge metaphors . . . significant in a Quaker context. 

The Presidential election note reads in full:

The result of the late Presidential contest is not merely a victory gained by one party over the other, but the more sublime spectacle, of a great people triumphing over mis-rule and breach of trust in their servants to whome was comited a limited power under which the[y] had attempted to subvert the liberty of this country.

A very large 4to. Original reverse calf, rubbed, losses at spine, but generally sound and looking quite smart for its age. Some occasional handling and light stains, blank endpapers are lacking, ending with the final leaf of text for the Psalms [complete]. A few small tears and losses to the final sheet of the Psalms.
