William Cowper (1731–1800) was a pivotal 18th-century evangelical and devotional poet who transitioned English poetry toward Romanticism while passionately advocating against slavery and exploring profound spiritual devotion amidst his own severe mental illness.

In "Charity" (1782) and “The Task” (1784), he used his voice to condemn the slave trade and defend the inherent rights of slaves, deeply influencing the abolitionist movement. His view of slaves was deeply rooted in his own personal devotion. He also collaborated on the famous Olney Hymns, which are known for their profound depth, beauty, and intimate exploration of faith. His work frequently reflects a Calvinist perspective, exploring God's "hidden blessings" within personal sorrow and the necessity of finding solace in divine love through immense personal suffering; certainly important to him in light of his ongoing struggle with severe depression.
