A very attractive example of a classic work by John Harris. Often overlooked today, Harris was one of the most influential authors of the mid-19th century. His work against greed and on generosity [especially toward the support of ministers and missions] and his 1842 book on the great commission were among the most widely distributed and read of the era and together played a pivotal role in the establishment of thinking of the local church as a "sending" agency, etc.
The present work, written in England, was picked up and widely distributed among the Methodists, seeing the lack of ability to generate enough funds as a significant hurdle to sending sufficient Methodist missionaries west during the westward expansion.
Harris, John. Mammon; Or, Covetousness the Sin of the Christian Church. New York. G. Lane & C. B. Tippett, for the Methodist Episcopal Church, at the Conference Office. James Collord, Printer. 1844. 249pp.
An attractive volume in full calf, front hinge just splitting and slightly splayed. Rubbed at extremities. Some light foxing and a tide stain infringing on text block. Good.
