Step 1 – Measure the tip When choosing an exhaust tip, consider three dimensions: inside diameter, exit diameter, and exhaust tip length. Step 2 – Install the chip. 1) Clean the tail pipe. Install exhaust tips on cold cars to avoid burns. Wipe down the tailpipe and exhaust tip with penetrating oil and shop rag. 2) Slide the tip. Try sliding the tip into the exhaust pipe. There may be some resistance, so use automotive grease to lubricate if necessary. Cover the end of the exhaust tip with a towel and tap it with a rubber mallet. 3) Secure the tip. Complete the installation according to the selected fastener style. Some models secure the exhaust tip by tightening screws or clamps.
