This is a beautifully made pair of Staffordshire flatback figures by Royale Stratford, reproducing one of the most charming designs from the Victorian era: a young prince and princess seated on spaniels carrying flower baskets. The original 19th-century versions of this design, believed to depict two of Queen Victoria's children, are among the most iconic and sought-after of all Staffordshire figures. Royale Stratford's reproduction captures the spirit of the original with careful hand-painted detail and the quality of craftsmanship the company was known for.

Each figure is titled in gold script on the base, "Prince" and "Princess," and the bold, confident colouring of the spaniels, the children's clothing, and the grassy bases gives the pair a lively, storybook quality. These are flatback figures, designed in the traditional Staffordshire manner to be displayed on a mantelpiece or shelf, with all the detail concentrated on the front and sides.

Royale Stratford, based in Stoke-on-Trent, operated between 1997 and 2005, producing finely made ceramic and bone china pieces inspired by traditional Staffordshire pottery. Despite its relatively short history, the company is well regarded for its careful craftsmanship and charming designs, and its pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Both figures bear the Royale Stratford backstamp on the base.
