"My ‘Small Pleasures 1.0’ screen print is in 3 layers of colour: cyan, magenta and yellow. The mug in the print is from a mug for which I drew the design by hand, based on traditional willow pattern china typical of the 19th century (when there were potteries in Ouseburn) and some of the landmarks of the Lower Ouseburn Valley. There’s a steam train going over the Ouseburn Viaduct at the top (from a 19th century JW Carmichael painting of the valley), and the 18th century Crawford’s Bridge can be seen underneath the arches of the 19th century Byker Bridge. The cake in the print is from my favourite patisserie in Ouseburn. I usually share cakes with friends so it not only means a special treat but also reminds me of all the times I’ve spent with friends, even when we can’t be in the same place together. The book was originally published in 1933 (the plate probably dates from around the same time), and is one of the Albert Campion series of detective stories by Margery Allingham which I have enjoyed for years. The title ‘Sweet Danger’ reminds me not to eat cake too often!"
