Ganryu 2 is the sequel to the original Ganryu game made by VISCO on NEOGEO back in 1999. Set in a feudal fantasy Japan, the game is inspired by the adventures of Takezo Musashi, detailed in the series of books "The Stone and the Sword." Play as Miyamoto Musashi, travelling through 17th century Japan from north to south, ultimately returning to the island of Ganryu-jima where his epic battle with Kojiro began.

After his victory against Kojiro, Musashi decided to meditate and pursue art in the north of Japan, in the province of Hokkaido. During one of his meditations, a spirit contacted him: "Miyamoto Musashi, our fight is not over, I am waiting for you to finish our fight once and for all! All of Japan will pay for your insult! I'm waiting for you, Miyamoto Musashi!" Recognizing the voice as Sasaki Kojirō's, Musashi realized that although Kojiro's body was defeated, his spirit remained with destructive intentions. Musashi must now travel across Japan to the island of Ganryu-jima, where he first defeated Sasaki Kojirō, to fight again and liberate Kojiro's spirit forever.
