Sapphire and diamond ring, 1920. Sapphires come in a variety of different colours, depending on the which element is present as an impurity. Iron can produce both a marine blue and also yellow in sapphires depending on the iron molecules within the stone, and can also produce a green hue. The striking sapphire at the centre of this ring shows these various hues at play - its sunny yellow body colour, with a splash of green in opposing corners - an unusual and attractive feature which which the cutter has cleverly chosen to emphasise rather than conceal. An unusual millegrain bordered yellow gold setting brings out its colour perfectly, complemented by a pair of white-tipped shoulders set with diamonds. A beautiful and truly unique ring.
