Steel spauldrons were a type of armor worn to protect the shoulders during medieval combat. The 14th century saw the development of simple spauldrons made of steel plates that were fastened to the upper arm with leather straps or laces. These spauldrons were typically smaller and lighter than later designs, and were often worn in conjunction with other types of armor such as mail or brigandine. Simple spauldrons like these were effective at deflecting blows and protecting the wearer's shoulders, but they did not provide as much coverage as more elaborate designs that became popular in the following centuries.
