This catalogue was published for the touring group exhibition "The Dingo Project," curated by Bandjalung man Djon Mundine OAM.
In Aboriginal culture, the dingo is a humanised animal spirit, often seen as lawless and untamed. In Arnhem Land, men might say ‘fnhe watu’ (literally ‘you dog’) jokingly. A canine, in contrast, is domesticated and controlled. How do you domesticate a wild animal? By feeding it, thus making it dependent. A dog on a leash constantly learns its limits.
"The Dingo Project" explores the spiritual mythology and historical narratives of ancestral dingoes, addressing familial and national forgiveness and Aboriginal connections to country and nature.
