Aquamarine is the blue variety of the mineral beryl, and much like its sister stone emerald, has been treasured throughout history as a gemstone. The delicate, fresh pale blue of aquamarine has long given it an association with water, and sailors traditionally believed that it possessed the ability to grant safe passage across water to anyone wearing it. The best examples of aquamarine hail from Brazil, and are famed for their blue colour and the exceptional size and clarity of their crystals, the largest being the 10,363 carat ‘Dom Pedro’ aquamarine, now on display in the Smithsonian Institute. This ring is set with a beautiful, blue aquamarine in a traditional ‘emerald’ cut, showcasing its superb colour and clarity.
