Considered by many the greatest novel of the twentieth century, Joyce'sUlysses deserved this typographical tribute and the artistic contribution of a painter of international stature. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), a founder of Abstract Expressionism, counted Joyce as his favorite modern author and drew upon the writings for titles to his paintings, drawings, and prints throughout his career. The project was four years in planning and a year and a half in production. The text benefits from current scholarship. The book and prints were exhibited at the gallery representing Motherwell, Knoedler & Company in New York City, in 1989.
