A nice H.L. Leonard 50-4 bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. 4 oz. Definitely not a D.F. rod, much more of a semi-full flexing action. The varnish and wraps are in good condition. A tiny bit of cosmetic casting cracks at the ferrule wraps. The Perfection style stripper would date it to the 1950’s. There is some grooving to one side of the snake guide (from a silk line) yet the ferrule fits are tight and the rod is straight. What is unusual is the absence of tipping to the wraps. Blonde oven temper cane in a general 3-up position. The main wraps are light tan. The ferrules are polished and the female welt has no patent date. The ferrules have top hat ferrule plugs. The grip is short, 5” in length, suggesting that this was intended as a ladies rod. The shape is a medium cigar. The seat is a downlocking square thread screwlock with a nickel silver pocket cap and butternut spacer. The pocket cap is stamped “The Leonard Rod, H.L. Leonard Rod Co. Makers” in a cartouche and “Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” below. The rod packs into a gray poplin bag and polished aluminum tube with the older style large (long) brass collar.
