Gary Hanel is an Encinitas, California based shaping legend who shapes a diverse mix of board. This five fin bonzer is one of the most versatile bonzers we've riden, it's outline is what you'd expect from a performance oriented fish, relatively thin and wide with a bit of kick in the nose rocker profile. We see this sort of as our replacement for a thruster as it works in many conditions comparable to what we would normally choose to ride a thruster in. Some bonzers are more rigid in how they carry speed in that you often have to maintain a very top to bottom approach, deviating from this could cause the board to lose speed. Other bonzers, like this Hanel, allow for a more liberating approach where your line can vary, change more spastically. For example, the latter would allow a rider to jive a couple mid-face pumps before drawing out a bottom turn where as the former would require a surfer to drop straight to the bottom.
