On 1 November 1914 a fleet of troopships and their escort of warships departed Albany in Western Australia, for the war in Europe. On board were 30 000 Australian and New Zealand troops. In the Arabian Sea they received news that Turkey had entered the war against Britain and were ordered to disembark in Egypt. There they spent the following months training at Mena Camp before departing for the Dardanelles and Gallipoli.
