44-63864 was built as a P-51D-20NA and accepted by the USAAF in December 1944. ‘463864 served with the 8th Air Force, 78th Fighter Group, 83 Fighter Squadron at RAF Duxford in England throughout the remainder of the War. Pilot First Lt. Hubert “Bill” Davis named this Mustang after his favorite racehorse, Twilight Tear, and flew it in most of his 35 combat missions, shooting down three enemy planes and incapacitating another. Following its wartime service, ‘463864 also served with two other air forces and under private ownership before landing in the Fagen Fighters hangar in 2005. Twilight Tear has since been restored to flying condition, with the genuine skin becoming PlaneTags.
