Drop into a little slice of surf history with this 1966 Gordon & Smith log. This was the year Nat Young won the World Surfing Championships held in San Diego on a self shaped, thin, convex bottom 9'4" log he called his Magic Sam. In the short video below you'll notice that Young was trimming fast, banking big powerful turns, and fitting in quick noserides with style. This heavy weight, Sam inspired log looks like it was way ahead of it's time with a rather progressive fin glassed onto the board. Although George Greenough was promoting raked back fins way before 1966 it took most other folks in California a little longer to come around to the advancements of a more refined design. They stuck to the classic D fin design while the Australian shredders of the time hopped on the Greenough train of thought. The slender outline, pulled in nose, and narrow squash tail of this G&S design you can tell it was built for speed and trimming! The rails are boxy and full which, when combined with the weight and low rocker profile, provide a smooth sailing momentum. The convex bottom contour allows the board to roll over onto its rail and bank smooth, graceful turns. Look for some waves with solid trim sections to really let this board loose!
