This seminal 1853 address, delivered at the Broadway Tabernacle, is a fascinating attempt by William H. Seward to redefine American independence not merely as a political status, but as a condition secured through a uniquely American commitment to agriculture, manufacturing, and technological innovation. Rejecting isolationism, Seward argues that true national sovereignty allows the United States to engage globally from a posture of economic stability and self-reliance as sa result of these commitments. This vision of "commercial diplomacy" foreshadows the strategic acumen that would later define his tenure as Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State.
The present copy inscribed by Seward to M[atthias] Sheeleigh.
