A nice Sam Carlson "Four" bamboo fly rod, 6'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. Serial number #6212-4652, the twelfth rod made in 1962. Four strip quad construction. It weighs 3.3 ounces on my scale. A crisp fast action. The rod has seen some moderate use with some brassing inside the snake guides and some cosmetic casting cracks at the ferrule wraps. Lightly flamed cane. The original owner's name is inscribed on the rod. Brown main wraps with yellow and black edges at all wraps. It has the usual superb varnish job that Sam was rightly known for. Agate stripper and black HSS snake guides. The step ferrules fit perfectly and are oxidized and  squared to the rod. An unusual feature of this rod is that it has a wood front cork check (with tenite being more common from Sam). Western style grip that's flatted to the front cork check. A tenite ring serves as the rear cork check. The reel seat is comprised of flatted cork with a small wood section that the butt cap is glued to. The rod has another unusual feature in that there is a wood strip inlaid into the grip as backing for the nickel silver ring to slide on. The cap and ring are oxidized with the cap showing a little edgewear oxidation. The rod packs into a cloth bag and aluminum tube with FE Thomas brass hardware.
