This traditional Japanese scroll painting, exemplifying the 花鳥畫/kacho-ga genre, features a vibrant scene with a bird in mid-flight alongside blossoming flowers, with calligraphy on the left side. The oval seal in the bottom right corner was also used on these pieces sold in auction through Bonhams. A very minor bit of paint has come off.
Born in Osaka, 加藤半渓/Kato Hankei (1841-1906) was a true literati painter - one of the last before the distractions of modern media. He studied with his father Kato Hanzan, his uncle Kato Bokkei and Xu Yutin.
