A very rare survivor. At one time used as a scrapbook, this superbly produced and rare landscape folio-sized catalog was issued by the finest funeral-ware and casket producer in America and is adorned on every page with fine heliotypes, 36 in all. Each image was covered over early in its life with late Victorian prints, but all heliotypes are now again visible with minor remains of scraps on images and a bit more so at extremities of each page. All adhesives appear to be animal based and reversible. Further conservation / restoration possible.
Founded by Samuel Stein, Stein Manufacturing made a name for itself by crafting the most elaborate caskets available in the United States and attracted headline attention it unveiled a special preparation for the body of President Ulysses S. Grant. Before their merger with National Casket [and subsequent decrease in quality], they had showrooms in New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Saint Louis.
