Diamond ring, early 20th century. The diamonds in this ring were all cut in the late 19th or early 20th century – each was cut to maximise the weight of the stone, and all are slightly different as a result. Stones of this era are characterised by their comparatively low number of facets compared to the modern brilliant-cut, and by their cut culets, meaning that the base of the stone is cut flat rather than tapering to a point. This cluster of nine antique cushion-cut diamonds is juxtaposed with a fluted yellow gold band, lending the design an extra feeling of warmth and opulence – great as a striking engagement ring, but also substantial enough to be worn as a standalone cocktail ring, to be worn on any finger.
