Formal description:

Hand made Japanese bonsai pot from Hokusai, external rim, cut feet, seal and signature of Hokusai underneath.

External dimensions:
127 x 103 x 51mm (5 x 4⅛ x 2 in)

Internal dimensions:
108 x 86 x 42mm (4¼ x 3⅜ x 1⅝ in)

SKU: 24993

Informal information:

Hokusai is a rarely seen artist who made super refined unglazed pots. He used the tatara (slab-building) method. But check out how sharp it is, particularly the rim, lower band and all the smoothed off edges. He is up there with Wajaku and Ryuen in my opinion, despite the different construction method.

His clay is also different, and much, much closer to antique chinese wares. I believe this is down to the influence of Sanshu Ichiyo who let him use his kiln, and must have been an influence.

This example has a lot more depth than your typical shohin pot and looks ideal for a powerful shohin tree.

Condition: Used, excellent.

Hokusai, Real name: Morihiko Yamamoto, born 1916, Aichi pref. Signature "Qing festival,  Northern Colour". Not the famed woodcut artist! His family business was tile making, and he began making bonsai pots some time between 1941-55. Originally he fired pieces in local senior potters kilns, those of Sanshu Ichiyo, Sugiura Fukuho and Mitsutoen. In 1971, he built his own kiln and arrived at a method of firing wares for a long time that gave him the look he wanted. I believe this would have felt logical as traditional Chinese firings were very long.

He had a break from pottery due to ill health, but did resume and was exploring porcelain, celadon and other glazes, although I've yet to see any of those.

His works are mame and shohin sized, slab built, unglazed and of very fine detail and precision, comparable to the finest of shohin pot makers.
