A striking and luminous large iridescent art glass vase attributed to Loetz — one of the most celebrated names in the history of European art glass. At 14.5 inches tall this is a commanding presence, its iridescent surface shifting and shimmering with every change of light in the extraordinary manner that made Loetz glass the sensation of the Art Nouveau era.
Loetz Witwe (Johann Loetz Witwe, founded 1836, Klostermühle, Bohemia — now Czech Republic) was the preeminent European art glass manufacturer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their iridescent glass — developed in direct competition with and inspiration from Tiffany Studios in New York — was awarded gold medals at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 and became synonymous with the finest Art Nouveau decorative arts worldwide. Authenticated Loetz pieces are held in virtually every major decorative arts museum collection and sell from $500 to over $50,000 at specialist auction houses including Dorotheum, Sotheby's, and Christie's.
