A superbly attractive imprint of the Humphrey Prideaux's [1648-1724] classic on the interaction of the Old Testament and New Testaments with a special emphasis on the inter-testamental period. Prideaux was Dean of Norwich and one of the foremost Orientalists of his time, and this his magnum opus.
The work was deeply influential and remains a standard in any competent theological library. Indeed, many years ago we sold the well-loved copy owned by Jonathan Edwards. Spurgeon quotes Prideaux extensively throughout his Treasury of the David [i.e. the Psalms]. A fine, full leather example with exemplary folding plates throughout.
[Spurgeon - Old and New Testament Christology]. Prideaux, Humphrey. The Old and New Testament Connected in the History of the Jews and Neighbouring Nations, from the Declension of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah to the Time of Christ. Complete in Four Volumes. Oxford. At the Clarendon Press. 1820. 357pp + 454pp + 499pp + 432pp + Expansive Index.
A very good set in original, fine calf; some rubbing at extremities as shown, a bit moreso on volume three. Some scattered foxing. Very solidly bound, shelf-handsome, all plates preserved, and ready to look smart and do good for a long-time to come.
