How Mass Loaded Vinyl works

Noise has one big enemy: mass. The denser the surface, the less sound passes through. Most apartment walls, hollow doors, and car panels don't have enough mass - that's why you can hear the neighbor's TV, traffic on the freeway, or your washing machine three rooms away.

This sheet is 2 lb/sq ft (9.8 kg/m²) - the same weight pros spec into recording studios and home theaters. The full 1 m x 1 m sheet weighs about 22 lb (9.8 kg). That mass is what blocks airborne sound.

1. Lay or stick the sheet on the noisy surface - drywall, door, floor, ceiling, vehicle panel.
2. Cut to fit with scissors or a utility knife. No power tools.
3. Cover or paint if you want a finished look - or leave it bare in a closet, garage, or vehicle.

Result: a measurable drop in noise transmission within an hour of opening the box.

Install in 3 steps

1. Measure the area you want to quiet. Mark the sheet on the back side with a marker.
2. Cut to fit with scissors or a utility knife. The sheet conforms to curves and corners.
3. Apply with double-sided tape, construction adhesive, staples, or screws. For doors and machinery, peel-and-stick acoustic tape works fine.
