Sapphire and diamond ring, 1920s. This ring centres on a gorgeous oval sapphire weighing 2.64 carats, of a mid violet-blue known as ‘Cornflower’, strongly associated with sapphires from Sri Lanka (Ceylon). In addition to its characteristic colour, this sapphire is notable for its clarity, the liveliness of its cut, as well as its rarity as an untreated stone, as Sri Lankan stones are often heated to improve their colour. Its setting is a perfect 1920s cluster, with a traditional surround of circular-cut diamonds, overlaid with scrolled shoulders at the sides to bring a touch of Art Deco geometry to the overall design.
