Lino Tagliapietra — Murano Glass Pyramid Table Lamp
Opaque White with Brown-Black Candy Stripe Decoration | Vetri Murano / Effetre International | c.1970s–80s
27 in. H × 10 in. W × 10 in. D
A bold and sculptural Postmodern table lamp in hand-blown Murano glass, designed by Lino Tagliapietra — widely regarded as the greatest glassblower of the 20th century. This distinctive pyramid form in opaque white glass with rhythmic brown-black "candy" stripe decoration is one of Tagliapietra's most recognized lamp designs, originally produced for Vetri Murano and subsequently reissued by Effetre International. The geometric pyramid silhouette, dramatic scale, and graphic surface decoration make this a statement piece equally at home in a serious design collection or a high-style interior.
Born in 1934 on the island of Murano, Tagliapietra began his apprenticeship at age 11 under maestro Archimede Seguso and achieved the status of Maestro Vetraio by the age of 21. He went on to serve as Artistic and Technical Director of Effetre International from 1976 to 1989, during which period this lamp was produced. His influence on the American studio glass movement is primarily attributed to his colleague Dale Chihuly, who freely called him "the greatest glassblower in the world." Tagliapietra's work is held in the permanent collections of over fifty international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian.
The pyramid lamp demonstrates Tagliapietra's facility with bold formal geometry and his ability to bring Murano's centuries-old hand-blowing traditions into dialogue with the graphic design vocabulary of Postmodern Italy. The candy stripe pattern — achieved through the laborious process of incorporating colored glass canes into the molten body — creates a striking visual rhythm that changes character dramatically when the lamp is illuminated.
