The Octopus OC15109-9 is a high-performance mechanical steering cable specifically designed for use with the Octopus Type R Remote Drive System. This cable features an 8" stroke and a 9-foot length, serving as the critical link between the autopilot drive motor and the boat’s existing steering mechanism (the helm or the rudder quadrant).
Unlike standard manual steering cables, Octopus cables are engineered to handle the constant, high-frequency micro-adjustments made by an autopilot system. The Type R cable is built with a high-density outer jacket and a low-friction core to minimize "lost motion" (slop). This ensures that the autopilot's commands are translated into immediate rudder movement, preventing the boat from "hunting" or wandering off course.
8" Stroke Length: Provides the standard travel distance required for most outboard and sterndrive steering configurations.
9-Foot Length: Ideal for installations where the Type R drive unit is mounted in close proximity to the steering helm or the engine's tilt tube.
Heavy-Duty Core: Designed for the repetitive, 24/7 duty cycle of an autopilot, offering greater longevity than consumer-grade manual cables.
Corrosion-Resistant Ends: Features stainless steel output rams and high-quality fittings to survive the moist environment of a boat's lazarette or engine bay.
Minimal Backlash: Engineered with tight tolerances to ensure that even the smallest motor movements result in rudder correction, increasing steering efficiency and reducing battery draw.
Type R System Specific: Designed for a perfect "plug-and-play" fit with the Octopus Type R mechanical drive motor.
Model Number: OC15109-9
Stroke: 8" (203 mm)
Length: 9 Feet (2.74 meters)
Compatibility: Octopus Type R Remote Drive Units
Application: Mechanical steering systems (Outboard, Sterndrive, or Inboard)
Materials: Stainless steel rod ends, high-impact polymer jacket
The OC15109-9 is the only cable choice when utilizing an Octopus Type R drive. Using an inferior or mismatched cable can lead to "play" in the steering, which forces the autopilot to work harder, potentially leading to premature motor failure or poor course-keeping. This 9-foot version is perfect for compact console layouts where the drive unit is tucked directly behind the dash.
When measuring for a steering cable, always avoid tight bends. A radius of less than 8 inches will increase friction and "stiffness," making the autopilot work harder and wear out faster. Ensure the cable is well-supported with cushioned clamps every 2–3 feet, but never zip-tie it so tightly that it crushes the outer jacket.
