A substantial and handsomely detailed 20th century terracotta Chinese warrior figure — a decorative reproduction in the tradition of the legendary Terracotta Army of the First Emperor of China. Two-piece construction. Standing 32 inches tall, this is a commanding decorative sculpture with genuine physical presence.
The original Terracotta Army was created for the tomb of Qin Shi Huang (259–210 BCE), the first Emperor of China, and was discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, Shaanxi Province — one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. The thousands of individually modeled warriors, horses, and chariots buried with the emperor were intended to protect him in the afterlife, and each figure was crafted with extraordinary attention to individual detail — facial features, armor, rank, and posture varying from figure to figure.
This 20th century example captures the essential dignity and martial authority of the original figures in terracotta — the characteristic stoic expression, layered armor, and commanding upright posture that have made the Terracotta Warriors one of the most recognized images in world art history.
