Kansa, Krishna's maternal uncle, who had imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki, sent the demoness Putana to kill infant Krishna by breastfeeding him with poisoned milk.

• Putana transformed herself into a beautiful cowherd girl and went to Krishna's house, where Yashoda, Krishna’s foster mother, allowed her to feed Krishna, believing her to be a genuine cowherd girl.
• Krishna, being the incarnation of Vishnu, immediately recognized Putana’s true identity and sucked the life out of her while breastfeeding.
• Putana screamed in agony and ran out of the house, but Krishna continued to cling to her, causing her to revert to her demon form before dying.
