This exquisite hand-printed silk piece, produced in 1957, is a reproduction of Samuel Howitt’s renowned 1799 engraving, Pheasant Hawking. Samuel Howitt, a self-taught artist of the late 18th century, was known for his naturalistic depictions of British wildlife and field sports. His detailed and dynamic engravings were a cornerstone of Orme’s celebrated collection of British Field Sports.

This piece was produced by Langley Prints Ltd, a company established in the early 19th century in Macclesfield. Langley Prints became known for its silk-printed artworks, often reflecting traditional British sporting themes. The company’s strong connection to Macclesfield’s rich silk heritage and their traditional hand-printing methods are reflected in this exceptional piece of vintage art.

The print is beautifully framed in its original mount by The Art Shop (C.J. DALE & SON), a picture framer located in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Condition:

The silk print is in very good condition, with vibrant colours and no noticeable fading. The original back cover paper shows some minor wear, with a few pieces missing along the edges. However, the frame remains structurally sound and continues to complement the artwork beautifully.

There is a minor issue with the hanging hardware on the back of the frame. One of the eyelet screws, used to attach the hanging wire, had become loose due to a slightly enlarged hole. Both eyelet screws have since been removed, but new hanging hardware can be easily installed if needed.

This unique hand-printed silk artwork would make a fine addition to any vintage collection or serve as an elegant decorative piece for those who appreciate both history and craftsmanship.
